This works lost the licence to build Burmeister & Wain engines to Harland & Wolff before it went into production. It later made Doxford & Sulzer diesel engines, the latter until 1978. After that the windows were covered with steel panels, and the works was used for overhauling naval missile systems. This works was built in the 19th century to construct marine diesel engines to Burmeister & Wain's patents. It was designed by Karl Bernardt, the executive architect being J Galt, and has an unusual hinged steel frame. It was originally largely glazed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
