Scope and Content Merklands Animals Lairage, South Street. Glasgow This shows the complex from the north-west. By the nature of its business it was all on one level. The Meadowside Granaries are in the background, and in the foreground the freight tramway which paralleled the high-level passenger line along the north bank of the River Clyde. In the 1960s and 1970s cattle and sheep began to be transported for long distances by road vehicle, if necessary using vehicle ferries, and this complex became redundant. It has since been demolished and the site is due to be redeveloped. This complex was built in 1904-7 to handle cattle and sheep imported from abroad. It had accommodation for 2,000 cattle and nearly 3,000 sheep, and had a slaughter house, chill rooms and cold store. From 1912 all cattle imported from Ireland and the Highlands also had to be landed here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
