Scope and Content Linthouse Engine Works & Shipyard, Govan Road, Glasgow This shows the shed fronting Holmfauld Road which probably housed the mould loft, where the lines of the ships were drawn full-sized to allow the parts of the hull to be accurately fabricated. The railing on the right is part of a bridge over the Clyde Tunnel. The shipbuilding part of Alexander Stephen & Sons became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968, and the yard then became an annexe to the adjacent Fairfield yard. The engine works was retained by the Stephens for a time. The site has now been cleared and partly redeveloped. This yard was laid out in 1869 in the grounds of Linthouse, a small mansion, by Alexander Stephen & Sons, who had been building ships at Kelvinhaugh for a number of years. The new yard was subsequently extended and rebuilt on a number of occasions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
