Scope and Content North Bridge, Edinburgh This shows the bridge from the south-west, looking from The Scotsman steps. The bridge slopes down to Princes Street, at the north end. On the left are the glazed roofs of the rebuilt Waverley Station, and in the background is the North British Hotel. The reconstruction of the North Bridge involved widening the approach from the south, and the opportunity was taken to build massive new structures on either side, with under-building from Market Street, seen below the bridge in this view. At the north end the North British Hotel was built at the same time. This bridge was built in 1894-7 to designs by Cunningham, Blyth & Westland, engineers, to replace a masonry viaduct completed in 1772, and designed by William Mylne. The new bridge was needed to allow Waverley Station to be remodelled. The contractors were Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
