Scope and Content Aerial view of building work, Scottish Parliament site, Holyrood, Edinburgh The distinctive shapes of the clustered assembly buildings, some partially-roofed, can be seen surrounded by cranes. These structures, which will hold the debating chamber and committee rooms, are designed to resemble upturned boats. While most of the parliament building is new, the red roof of Queensberry House can also be seen in the photograph. This important 17th-century building will also form part of the parliament development, acting as an administration centre for the complex. This photograph was taken in March 2003, and shows building work progressing on the new Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood. The building was begun in 1999 and was designed by a team headed by the Spanish architect Enric Miralles (1955-2000). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
