Scope and Content Dean Bridge, Edinburgh This shows the bridge from the south-west. Three of the arches are fully visible, with part of the fourth on the right. The lighter footpath arches are clearly visible. Telford termed these 'ascentitious' arches. In the foreground is the site of a former flour mill, later part of the Dean Distillery. This bridge is generally reckoned to be one of Telford's finest designs, and still carries main road traffic. The bridge's roadway is carried on a series of internal arches. It can no longer be seen from this viewpoint, as offices have been built on the site of the former mill. This remarkable bridge was built in 1829-31 to designs by Thomas Telford to carry a new coach road over the valley of the Water of Leith. It also served to open up the west bank of the river to housing development. It has four segmental spans, with the footpaths carried on lighter arches. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
