Scope and Content Iron warehouses and offices, Nos 37-41 Midland Street, Glasgow This shows the centre of the ground floor of the Oswald Street frontage of the building from the west. The central arched cart entry gave access to an internal well fitted with wooden bins for storing rod, bar and other sections of iron, as well as nuts, bolts and rivets. There were offices in front of this well. This type of business was becoming obsolete in 1970. It was then run by The Glasgow Engineers' Supplies Co Ltd. It closed in the 1970s, and the site has been redeveloped as a multi-storeyed car park, run in connection with the adjoining Glasgow Central railway station. This building was constructed in 1869 for John Stewart & Co, iron merchants. It was one of a number of warehouses in the centre of Glasgow where small engineering firms could buy iron and steel in small quantities, and also such requisites as nuts, bolts and rivets.
