Scope and Content Canal stables, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow Bridge, East Dunbartonshire This shows part of the left-hand wing of the block, which contained the stalls for the horses. The window has horizontal (lying) panes, a Lanarkshire feature. Note the fine ashlar construction, reflecting the prestige of the passage boat operation. The stables was next to a bascule (later a swing) bridge over the canal, and the keeper's house was used by the bridge-keeper. The roof of the building was removed in the 1970s, and it lay derelict until about 1990, when it was converted into a pub/ restaurant. This is one of a series of stables built by the Forth & Clyde Canal Co, probably in about 1830, to provide relays for horses for their fast passage boats which operated from Port Dundas to Lock 16 at Camelon. After this service ceased the horse-keeper's houses were used by other canal employees. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
