Scope and Content 'Gladiator Gate' and North Lodge, Glamis Castle, Angus, from west This shows part of the 'Gladiator Gate' which was constructed in the late 17th century and rebuilt on this site in the late 18th century. The square gate piers have projecting rectangular columns (pilasters) and are surmounted with orb finials. The flanking walls are battlemented and support models of gladiators. The main carriage entrance and the pedestrian entrances in each wall have decorative wrought-iron gates. Gatehouses were located around the estate perimeter and were occupied by the servant and his family who opened and closed the gates leading to the country house or castle. The buildings were designed to hint at the quality of the architecture of the main house or constructed in an architectural style favoured by the owner of the estate. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891.
