Scope and Content Craigward Maltings, Caledonian Road, Alloa, Clackmannan This shows the north side of the maltings from the north-east, with the malt kilns in the centre of the block. The design of the kiln ventilators was unique, and gave the maltings a monumental character. Note the wooden shutters in the gable openings, used to control the temperature of the growing malt. The maltings as built had a matching west wing. This was being demolished in 1970, and the partial demolition had revealed that a drum malting plant had been installed to the west. Demolition of the rest of the block had been completed by the end of 1970. This large block of maltings was built in 1868 by George Younger & Son to make malt for their Candleriggs Brewery in Alloa. It was one of the largest maltings in Scotland at the time, and was designed to be rail served. A large block of malt hoppers was added later, probably in the 1890s.
