Scope and Content Aqueduct, Stockingfield Junction, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This shows the west face of the aqueduct from the south-west. The masonry is of the most sophisticated design and construction, being curved both on plan and in elevation. The new main line curves to the left, and the Glasgow Branch is to the right. Whitworth designed three aqueducts for the Forth & Clyde Canal. One, over Maryhill Road, was replaced in 1881, and the third, over Possil Road, was by-passed at about the same time. The last-named still exists, to the west of its replacement, but is difficult to see. This aqueduct is situated at the point where the main line of the Forth & Clyde Canal diverges from the Glasgow Branch in the direction of Bowling, which it reached in 1790. This section of the main line was designed by Robert Whitworth, and built between 1786 and 1790. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
