Scope and Content Oil & Colour Works, No 50 Ruchill Street, Glasgow This shows the building on the south side of Ruchill Street from the west. This is a fine example of the use of red and white brick construction, and may well be the original c.1874 building. Part of the buildings on the north side of the street can be seen on the left. Lead-based paints were extensively used until recent years, as white lead (lead carbonate) is a very smooth and opaque pigment, allowing good covering power. They also offer good corrosion resistance when applied to iron or steel. However there are public heath problems in using them, so their use is restricted. This works was built from c.1874 for Alexander, Fergusson & Co. It is situated on both sides of Ruchill Street, on the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal. The firm specialised for many years in making lead-based pigments (red lead, white lead and litharge) and lead-based paints. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
