Scope and Content Railway bridges, Duke Street, Glasgow This shows the bridge carrying the North British Railway's Glasgow to Coatbridge line in the foreground, and the one carrying the sidings serving the Parkhead Forge of William Beardmore & Co to the rear. Part of Parkhead Forge can be seen in the right background. The newer bridge was built to take wagons carrying heavy naval gun barrels and other heavy forgings from the forge to shipbuilding yards down the River Clyde. It was probably constructed in the first decade of the 20th century when Beardmores built their Naval Construction Yard at Dalmuir. This pair of bridges was constructed to carry the North British Railway's Glasgow to Coatbridge line, and sidings serving William Beardmore & Co's Parkhead Forge over Duke Street. The north bridge probably dates from 1871, when the Coatbridge line opened, and the other from the early 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
