Scope and Content Railway bridge, Parkhead, Glasgow This shows the bridge over the North British Railway's Glasgow to Coatbridge line, and also over sidings serving the Parkhead Forge of William Beardmore & Co, part of which can be seen in the background. The length of the span is due to its crossing the other railways on a skew. The suburban potential of this route was virtually eliminated by the takeover of Glasgow's street horse tramways by the Corporation in 1894, and by first the improvement of services, and then by electrification. The line closed in the 1970s, and has been dismantled. This is the longer of a pair of bridges built in about 1894 by the Caledonian Railway to carry a link line from its London Road branch to Balornock and Possil, intended to create a circular suburban route to the north and east of Glasgow. It was used almost entirely by goods and mineral trains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
