Scope and Content St Enoch Station, Glasgow This shows part of the Howard Street frontage of the 1898-1902 extension. This arch gave access to a walkway under the extension, which had been built out over the Howard Street pavement, as seen here. The Gothic arch echoes the style of the first station and its hotel. St Enoch was closed in 1965, and its services diverted to Central Station. It was used as a car park until the late 1970s, when it was demolished. A large shopping mall - the St Enoch Centre - and associated car parks have been built on the site. This station was built by the Glasgow & South Western Railway for the inauguration of through Anglo-Scottish train services, jointly with the Midland Railway. It opened in 1876. It was extended to the south in 1898-1902, in similar style. The whole station was built on an undercroft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
