Scope and Content Portland Suspension Bridge, Carlton Place, Glasgow This shows the deck of the bridge, looking north. The lattice girder side girders are 1871 replacements for the original, lighter ones. At the same time the suspension chains were lowered to meet the bottom of the deck. The generous proportions of the structure are evident. The deck of the bridge was strengthened in 1871 by Bell & Miller to take account of a number of accidents to suspension bridges, but the pylons, and most of the suspension chains are original. The bridge is still in use. This bridge was built in 1851 at the expense of the landowners of the parish of Gorbals to provide access to the city centre from new housing being built to the south of the river. The ironwork was designed by George Martin, engineer, and the masonry pylons by Alexander Kirkland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
