Scope and Content Tailoring Workshops, No 42 Spean Street, Glasgow This shows a passage through the building, which gives a clear idea of the original decorative treatment. When the South of Scotland Electricity Board took over the building as their offices they painted over the decorated panels on the principal elevation to make the building look more 'up-to-date'. This factory was American-inspired, with its flat roof and steel frame. It was set in extensive grounds, partly laid out as a landscape, and partly as recreation grounds. New building and car parks have obscured much of the original intention. The complex is now owned by Scottish Power. This factory was built in 1913-1922 for Wallace, Scott & Co, who made rainwear with the brand name 'Dexter'. The building was designed by Sir J J Burnet, and has extensive glazing to suit its purpose. When completed it had a steamer-like chimney on top of the main block.
