Scope and Content Tobacco Pipe Works, Nos 26-42 Bain Street, Glasgow This shows the western section of the Moncur Street frontage of the building from the south-east, with Gibson Street at the far end of the block. By 1970 the buildings were in multiple occupation. The manufacture of clay tobacco pipes was a Glasgow speciality, probably linked to the city's tobacco trade. The pipes were moulded by hand, by women workers, hence the large floor area required. Much of the output was exported. Most of the complex survives, and is being converted into flats. This large factory was built in 1876-7 for W White & Son, clay pipe makers, to designs by M Forsyth, architect. It was designed to be built in stone, but this could not be afforded, so brick was used instead. It consisted of three four-storeyed and attic blocks of moulding shops forming a U-plan, with kilns in the middle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
