Scope and Content Pier, Caledonian Canal, Banavie, Highland This shows the Caledonian Canal to the south of the swing bridge, looking towards the entrance Lock at Corpach. The jetty was built for vessels waiting to go through the bridge. Here two Lossiemouth-based fishing boats are moored to the jetty. The signal box in this view has now been replaced by the control centre for radio controlled signalling of the West Highland and West Highland Extension railways. The bridge remains in use. This bridge was built to carry the West Highland Extension Railway over the Caledonian Canal. The railway runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson. The canal was opened in 1822, and runs from Loch Linnhe to the Beauly Firth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
