Scope and Content Banavie Railway Swing Bridge, Caledonian Canal, Highland This shows the bridge from the west, open for the railway. It is a riveted steel truss structure. The signal box at the far end, of standard West Highland Extension design, controlled the operation of the bridge, and also a level crossing. This view was taken from the cab of a diesel locomotive. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. This bridge was built to carry the West Highland Extension Railway over the Caledonian Canal. The railway runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson. The canal was opened in 1822, and runs from Loch Linnhe to the Beauly Firth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
