Scope and Content Boudoir, Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries & Galloway The boudoir occupies the first floor of the south-east tower of the castle. The windows, with their original shutters, have fine views over the formal terraced gardens, and the window seat (right) takes full advantage of the outlook to the south. The Jacobean-style plasterwork ceiling, with the Douglas heart emblem prominently displayed, dates from c.1840. The furnishings, predominately French, include elegant King Louis XV wall lights decorated with porcelain flowers, mid-18th-century side tables flanking the fireplace, and chairs (foreground), covered in silk brocade, made in c.1756. The boudoir was the Duchess of Queensberry's private sitting room, and the room where she kept personal treasures. Its position in the south-east tower gave splendid views over the gardens to the parkland and the wooded Nithsdale hills beyond, and caught the sun in the morning and for much of the afternoon. Here the duchess could entertain friends, write letters, engage in activities such as drawing, needlework and watercolouring, and give instructions to servants on the duties of the day. The room has a connecting door to the 'White Bedroom' in the east wing. Drumlanrig Castle, one of the great Renaissance courtyard houses of Scottish domestic architecture, was built between 1679 and 1690 for William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, on the site of a late 14th-century Douglas stronghold. The castle passed to the Dukes of Buccleuch in 1810, and is now the home of the 9th Duke (11th Duke of Queensberry). It houses many great family treasures and important works of art, including magnificent carvings and a fine collection of paintings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
