Scope and Content Harbour and Piers, Mallaig, Highland This shows fishing boats in the harbour, which is formed by the steamer pier (on the left in this view) and by a timber-faced quay (seen here in the foreground) and pier. The boats in the foreground are used for inshore fishing for white fish using seine nets. These boats were typical of the west-coast fleet, built with Government assistance after World War II. This type of boat has now all but disappeared. The larger type of wooden East Coast boat, an example of which is behind these vessels, has also become almost obsolete. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. It was built to provide a rail-linked terminus for steamer services to the Outer Isles, and to encourage the fishing industry, and a harbour was built as part of the scheme.
