Scope and Content Harbour and Piers, Mallaig, Highland This shows the car ferry MV 'Clansman' at the steamer pier, built, like the viaducts and much else on the line, from concrete. This vessel was built in 1964 for the service she is on here, the route from Mallaig to Armadale on Skye, part of a land/sea/land/sea route to the Western Isles. Though the West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry, both of these functions have now ended. Because of its scenic beauty it now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. It was built to provide a rail-linked terminus for steamer services to the Outer Isles, and to encourage the fishing industry, and a harbour was built as part of the scheme.
