Scope and Content Harbour and Piers, Mallaig, Highland This shows fishing boats in the harbour, which is formed by the steamer pier, part of which is seen here, and by a timber-faced quay and pier. The small boats on the right are used for inshore fishing, and the larger one on the left for deep-sea fishing. Until the early 1960s the catch was taken to market by rail. Though the West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry, both of these functions have now ended. Because of its scenic beauty it now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. It was built to provide a rail-linked terminus for steamer services to the Outer Isles, and to encourage the fishing industry, and a harbour was built as part of the scheme.
