Scope and Content Mallaig Station, Highland This shows the box from the north-west. It is of the standard West Highland Extension Railway type, with overhanging eaves, but is the largest on the line. The small platform is for the signalman to use when he is accepting or issuing the tablet that is the token of permission to enter a single line section. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. This signal box controlled all the points and signals in the station area.
