Scope and Content Mallaig Station, Highland This shows the exterior of the booking office, with the main terminal building to the left. The very basic character of this little brick building suggests that it was originally provided as temporary accommodation, and never replaced. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. The traffic was never very heavy, hence the limited scale of this station. The terminal building is still in use, but the awnings behind have been removed. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. This station has an island platform, originally with an awning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
