Scope and Content Mallaig Station, Highland This shows the interior of the station, with the glazed awning. The small size of the concourse is obvious. The white-painted arch in the centre is the exit to the street. The railway carriage is a former Caledonian Railway one, part of a special train run by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. The traffic was never very heavy, hence the limited scale of this station. The glazed awning has now been removed. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. This station has an island platform, originally with an awning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
