Scope and Content Mallaig Station, Highland This shows the station from the north-west, with the terminal building, behind the brick booking office, on the left, and the island platform with its awning to the right. The loop line to the right was latterly used by locomotives running round their trains, but it also originally led to a siding on the steamer pier. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. This station has an island platform, originally with an awning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
