Scope and Content Mallaig Station, Highland This shows the island platform looking towards the buffer stops. At the far end of the steel-framed awning is the terminal building, which curiously did not incorporate the booking office, which was in a separate building. The line to the left led to the steamer pier, and was used for goods interchange, and fish traffic. The West Highland Extension Railway was built to link with ferry services to the Western Isles, and to encourage the development of the fishing industry. It was a difficult line to build, and runs through some of the finest scenery in the Western Highlands. It now carries a heavy tourist traffic in summer. Mallaig is the western terminus of the West Highland Extension Railway, which runs from Banavie to Mallaig, and which was opened in 1901. The engineers for the line were Simpson & Wilson, and the contractors Robert McAlpine & Sons. This station has an island platform, originally with an awning. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
