Scope and Content Fishermen's houses, Nos 3-14 Foreland, Ballantrae, South Ayrshire This shows one of the two rows of houses that were built for fishermen using the new harbour. The end of the second one is on the left, and there are inter-war council houses on the right. The cottages on the left, with canted dormer windows, are probably in original condition. The harbour was only used by small craft in 1970. There were still some larger boats owned in Ballantrae in 1970, but they used Girvan as a base, with its better harbour and road and rail connections. Girvan-based boats still use the registration letters BA for Ballantrae, reflecting that port's earlier importance. Ballantrae had been a beach-fishing station for many years before a new harbour and associated houses were constructed in about 1860. This consisted of an L-plan pier, well-built of red sandstone. The utility of the harbour was limited by the failure to construct a north breakwater, and by its shallowness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
