Scope and Content East Lodge, Kinlochmoidart House, Highland, from south This shows the East Lodge which was built c.1884 and probably also designed by William Leiper. The gabled canopy has a white-painted rustic insert and there are simple benches at either side of the entrance door. The walls are hung with tiles that have scalloped banding. Gatehouses were located around the estate perimeter and were occupied by the servant and his family who opened and closed the gates leading to the country house. The buildings were designed to hint at the quality of the architecture of the main house or constructed in an architectural style favoured by the owner of the estate. Kinlochmoidart House was built in 1884 for Robert Stewart, distiller and stands on the site of an earlier house which was destroyed by fire in the mid-18th century. William Leiper (1839-1916), designed the house in Scots Baronial style and used local whinstone and red Ballochmyle sandstone in the construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
