Scope and Content Muniment Room, Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries & Galloway The muniment room, a fortified room in the west wing of the house, occupies the north end of the first floor. The ceiling is vaulted, the walls oak-lined, and the huge iron inner door a precaution against fire spreading from the outside to destroy the documents inside. The muniment or charter room was a 'strong' room designed to hold the records, documents and title-deeds or charters that recorded the duke's legal right to the lands that comprised his huge estate. The room was the domain of the factor or land agent employed by the duke to run his estate, and protected against fire and unauthorised entry by the iron door which was kept firmly locked. Drumlanrig Castle, one of the great Renaissance courtyard houses of Scottish domestic architecture, was built between 1679 and 1690 for William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, on the site of a late 14th-century Douglas stronghold. The castle passed to the Dukes of Buccleuch in 1810, and is now the home of the 9th Duke (11th Duke of Queensberry). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
