Scope and Content Gas Manager's House from north-east, Gas House, Culzean Castle, South Ayrshire This shows the mid-19th-century gas manager's house (left) with its 'blind' oculus window, crowstepped gables and miniature corner turrets. The remains of other parts of the gasworks are visible as low walls in the foreground. The gas manager's house and the gas house were restored in the 1990s and now house an exhibition on the history of gas power. The gas manager was in charge of the running of Culzean Castle's gasworks, and was on call 24 hours a day to monitor the gas supply to the estate. In 1881 the manager was a Mr Matthew Walker, then aged 76. He had held the position for 40 years and shared the gas manager's house with his wife Anne, and their two daughters. Culzean Castle was remodelled by architect Robert Adam (1728-92) from 1777 onwards for David, 10th Earl of Cassilis. He extended the late 16th-century, L-plan tower-house in the Castellated style and added a drum tower in 1785. Adam also designed the Neo-Classical interior, oval staircase (built 1787), and adjacent home farm. The castle was extended to the west in 1875 by architects Wardrop & Reid, and restored in the 20th century for The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
