Scope and Content Aerial view of Culzean Castle from the west, South Ayrshire This aerial view shows the castle in its dramatic clifftop position (centre right), linked to a stable block with clock-tower by an almost circular castellated walled court. A lookout tower overlooks the sheltered bay. The square of buildings centre top is the Home Farm, designed by Robert Adam in 1777, which was converted to a visitor centre for the country park in 1973. A wide variety of estate buildings survive at Culzean, indicating the wealth and status of the landowner. These include necessary structures like stables, lodges and farm buildings, but also those designed purely for the pleasure of their owners, like the grotto, bath house, pagoda and gazebo. Other highly decorative buildings like the camellia house and the orangery, also provided exotic flowers and fruit for the house. Culzean Castle was remodelled by architect Robert Adam (1728-92) from 1777 onwards for David, 10th Earl of Cassilis. He extended the late 16th-century, L-plan tower-house in the Castellated style and added a drum tower in 1785. Adam also designed the Neo-Classical interior, oval staircase (built 1787), and adjacent home farm. The castle was extended to the west in 1875 by architects Wardrop & Reid, and restored in the 20th century for The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
