Scope and Content Fort at Bertha, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort is at Bertha and is built on the N bank of the River Almond. The fort was written about as far back as 1757, but it was the early 20th century before the exact layout was recorded. Sections of the rampart are visible on the ground. This is an aerial view of the site. Sections of the fort can be seen as cropmarks between the modern road, the railway and the River Almond. At ground level the ramparts appear as broad mounds. The name Bertha is first recorded in the fourteenth century. Before that, it may have been known as Rath inver Amon (fort at the mouth of the Almond). The site has been excavated. Finds, including pottery, are in Perth Museum and Art Gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
