Scope and Content Coach house and stable block from east, Steading, Cluny Castle, Highland This shows a rubble-built stable block which had seven bays with an arched coach house entrance and two gabled loft doors in the attic. The design of this building is functional rather than decorative but the stone used in the construction is similar to that used in the castle. The greater part of the estate's income would probably have come from renting farms and the sale of livestock and crops. This building would have stored carriages, wagons and farming implements on the ground floor and hay for the animals in the loft. Cluny Castle was built in 1805 for the Macphersons of Cluny and stands on the site of an earlier castle which was destroyed by fire in 1746. William Laidlaw Carruthers, Inverness, designed the north-west wing and the Queen Anne Revival-style porch c.1890. Many of the estate buildings were also built when the castle was rebuilt, including gate lodges, stables, meal mill, saw mill and walled gardens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
