Scope and Content Saw mill machinery, Stables, Cluny Castle, Highland This shows part of the saw bench in the converted carriage house. The wooden rollers made it easier to move large logs and the canopy over the blade protected workers at the machine from splinters. There are ruins of an earlier saw mill on the estate, and this saw bench was probably moved from there. Saw mills were often built to cut into planks trees that were grown on the estate. The wood could either be sold for a profit or used in estate buildings. Cluny Castle was built in 1805 for the Macphersons of Cluny and stands on the site of an earlier castle which was destroyed by fire in 1746. William Laidlaw Carruthers, Inverness, designed the north-west wing and the Queen Anne Revival-style porch c.1890. The stable range was built in the early 19th century, probably around the time of the rebuilding of the castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
