Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number E 31006 CN

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 801550

Scope and Content Parterre garden, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway The garden is two acres in extent and is divided into a number of different sections. This photograph shows a formal parterre, with box hedges and roses in an oval arrangement. At the extreme right of the photograph, the edge of a lawn can be seen. Hornel and his sister were very keen gardeners, and Hornel was influenced by his trips to the Far East, even bringing back exotic plants from his visits. Unfortunately, no plans survive from the early stages of the garden, but there are photographs dating from about1930. After Hornel's death, his sister looked after the garden until around 1950. The garden at the rear of Broughton House, Kirkcudbright, was designed by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933). Broughton House, which was first built in the mid-18th century, was purchased by Hornel in 1895, and was used as a studio, gallery and residence until his death. The house and gardens are now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
