Scope and Content New admissions room, Craig Dunain Hospital (Northern Counties District Lunatic Asylum), Leachkin Road, Inverness, Highland Craig Dunain Hospital, originally the Inverness District Asylum, was opened in 1864 as a result of the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act. It was designed by James Matthews of Aberdeen and built on a commanding position above Inverness. It changed its name to Craig Dunain in 1947 and was finally closed in 2000. This shows a new admissions room created as part of expansion plans in the late 1890s. A new ward was opened in 1898, built onto the west wing where male patients were housed. Fine furnishings were considered important and the new ward had a panelled dado with rich crimson wallpaper above. There was rigid segregation of the sexes at Craig Dunain. Dr J C MacKenzie, Superintendent of the hospital in 1894, commented on the 'complete tranquillity' which reigned on the male side compared to the 'talkative and noisy' women patients, housed on the east side of this long building.
