Scope and Content Drawing showing proposed plan of ground floor, Craig Dunain Hospital (Northern Counties District Lunatic Asylum), Leachkin Road, Inverness, Highland Inverness District Asylum, the third District Asylum to be set up in Scotland, was opened in 1864 on a 180-acre site on a ridge overlooking the town of Inverness. In 1947 its name was changed to Craig Dunain Hospital, known locally as 'the Craig'. It was closed in July 2000. This shows the ground-floor plan for this vast asylum which was designed and built by Aberdeen architect, James Matthews. It demonstrates the rigid segregation of the sexes with women in the east wing and men in the west. Between the wings were shared kitchen facilities and a dining area. By 1857 Scotland's seven Royal Asylums were so overcrowded that the Lunacy (Scotland) Act led to the setting up of District Lunacy Boards with the task of providing accommodation for 'pauper lunatics' and employing commissioners to inspect these institutions and grant operating licences.
