Scope and Content Drawing showing 'Official Block, Gartloch Asylum', Gartloch Hospital, Gartloch Road, Glasgow Gartloch Hospital was opened on the east side of Glasgow in 1986 as the city's District Asylum for 'pauper lunatics' following the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act. This vast, red sandstone, Scots Baronial-style institution was designed by architects, Thomson & Sandilands. It was closed in 1996. This shows a drawing of the imposing administrative block which dominated the various buildings of this enormous institution. With its ornate twin towers flanking the entrance it was visible for miles. Beside the asylum was a range of single-storeyed outbuildings comprising boiler house, laundry and workshops. During World War II (1939-45), Gartloch became a casualty hospital under the Emergency Medical Scheme, its patients being moved to other psychiatric hospitals for the duration of the war. The hutted wards built then became a 160-bed medical unit and nurses' training school when war was over. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
