Scope and Content Farm steading, Gartloch Hospital, Gartloch Road, Glasgow The foundation stone of the City of Glasgow District Asylum for 'pauper lunatics' was laid on 8 November 1892 and the hospital admitted its first patients in 1896. It was designed by architects, Thomson & Sandilands and was renamed Gartloch Hospital before being closed in 1996. This shows part of the farm steading, now derelict, which belonged to this vast and imposing, red sandstone institution. This steading was built on the site of the home farm belonging to the mansion house which stood at Gartloch before the site was bought for the hospital in 1889. Gartloch was a landmark visible for miles around with its impressive, three-storeyed administrative block topped by ornate, twin towers. Its design included new features such as villa accommodation for patients and a self-contained hospital unit for the treatment of other medical conditions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
