Scope and Content Courtyard entrance to steading from west, Gartloch Hospital, Gartloch Road, Glasgow Gartloch Hospital was opened on the eastern edge of Glasgow in 1896 as the city's District Asylum for 'pauper lunatics'. This vast, red sandstone, Scots Baronial-style institution, designed by architects, Thomson & Sandilands was typical of the type of asylum built at the turn of the century. It closed in 1996. This shows part of the derelict farm steading on the north side of this enormous institution. It was built on the site of the former home farm which had belonged to the mansion house on whose land Gartloch was constructed. A farm workers' block was built in 1904 but has since been demolished. Following the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act, District Lunacy Boards were given responsibility for the 'pauper lunatics' in their area. The first District Asylum, built at Lochgilphead in in 1863 served the district of Argyll. The last was Bangour Hospital, built in 1905, which served Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
