Scope and Content Largo Parish Church, Upper Largo, Fife Largo Parish Church stands within its churchyard high above the surrounding village of Upper Largo. It was rebuilt in 1816-17 to designs by the architect, Alexander Leslie, incorporating the 17th-century chancel and tower of the original church on the site. This photograph was taken in 1889 by Erskine Beveridge. The church is cruciform (cross-shaped) in plan, with a chancel, dating from 1623, at the east end (right). The west end of the chancel is straddled by a square tower, dating from 1628, with a parapet added in 1816-17, and an octagonal stone spire with small windows and a large clock-face. The nave (left) and south transept (centre), both built in 1816-17, have obelisk pinnacles on their gables, and are remarkably similar in style to the original 17th-century chancel. The churchyard is surrounded by a rubble wall built in 1657, the upkeep of which was the responsibility of the church heritors. At its gate is an early 19th-century Offertory House (extreme right), a shelter in which the church elders sat to collect money for relief of the poor. The house at Upper Largo is one of the few surviving examples in Fife. Most Offertory Houses were not used after the introduction of the Poor Law Act in 1845, but many doubled as Session Houses and were used as meeting places for members of the Kirk Session.
