Scope and Content Easterbrook Hall, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway, from west Crichton Royal Hospital, opened in 1839, was the seventh Royal Asylum founded in Scotland for the care of the mentally ill. From the start, Crichton Royal's progressive and enlightened attitude towards the treatment of its patients ensured its rapid expansion and the high regard in which it was held. This shows Easterbook Hall, brainchild of Dr Charles Easterbrook, Physician Superintendent at Crichton Royal from 1908 until his retirement in 1937. Designed following a study tour in North America, it provided recreational and therapeutic facilities for the entire hospital and was opened in 1938. At a cost of £60,000, Easterbrook Hall included a recreation hall big enough to seat 1,000 people, a canteen, library, reading room, shop, occupational therapy department, electrotherapy department, X-ray plant, gymnasium, squash court, hydrotherapy department and swimming pool.
