Scope and Content Boiler house and former steading, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway, from north-east (steading now Solway House) Crichton Royal Hospital was founded in 1839 with a legacy of £100,000 from the estate of Dr James Crichton (1765-1823), who had made a large fortune trading in the East. From the start the hospital pursued enlightened and progressive policies in the care and treatment of the mentally ill. This shows the boiler house and beyond that the residential section of the farm steading, which became known as Solway House in 1953. The boiler house with its 36.5m-high chimney was built in 1894 and contained three large boilers made by Galloways of Manchester. In 1894, it was decided that Crichton Royal, already self-sufficient in so many ways, should convert to electric power produced on site. The new boiler house produced enough power for all the residential accommodation, kitchens, recreational facilities, farm steadings, laundry and workshops on the estate.
