Scope and Content Crichton Memorial Church, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Crichton Royal Hospital, founded in 1839, was the last of seven Scottish Royal Asylums starting with Montrose Asylum in 1780. Crichton Royal Hospital expanded rapidly and gained a high reputation for the enlightened and progressive approach it took towards to the treatment and care of the mentally ill. This shows Crichton Memorial Church, designed by architect, Sydney Mitchell, in memory of Elizabeth Crichton, who founded the asylum. This magnificent Gothic-style church was built, to seat 400 people. Work began in 1888 but was not completed until 1897 by which time the cost had risen from £5,000 to £30,000. A site conveniently near the two main houses and farm associated with the hospital was chosen for the church, and the firm of William Vickers, Glasgow, contracted to carry out the stone carving. The stained glass windows are fine examples of the work of Oscar Patterson. The church is inter-denominational and was dedicated in October 1897. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
