Scope and Content Detail of chimney on steading, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90). This celebrated Victorian architect pioneered a new, elaborate, Gothic-inspired style of architecture which contrasted sharply with the simple, square-cut elegance of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town. This shows one of the chimney-stacks built by Gowans for the steading in the mid-19th century. It is hard to believe that this ornate chimney was designed as part of a farm labourers' cottage. It is characteristic of the style developed by Gowans and clearly shows his elaborate use of decorative masonry work. Although Gowans served his apprenticeship as an architect, he also became a prominent railway engineer and quarry master before being made Lord Dean of Guild in Edinburgh in 1885. The following year he became Chairman of the International Exhibition held in the city and was knighted by Queen Victoria. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
