Scope and Content Detail of chimney on steading, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, some 9.6km south-west of Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90). This prominent Scottish architect pioneered an ornate, Gothic-inspired style of architecture but was also a highly successful railway engineer, quarry manager and local government politician. This shows one of the elaborate chimney-stacks built by Gowans for his farm steading in the mid-19th century. It demonstrates his skilful use of decorative masonry work. Even the chimney pot is castellated. It is similar in style to some of the chimneys he designed for his showpiece Edinburgh home, Rockville. Rockville, in Napier Road, Edinburgh, was designed and built by Gowans in 1858. It was an idiosyncratic masterpiece of Gothic-inspired architecture using a mosaic of Scottish stone. Unfortunately, Rockville was demolished in 1966 but Gowanbank has recently been faithfully restored. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
