Scope and Content Carved panel on steading, Gowanbank Farm, West Lothian Gowanbank, near Linlithgow, was the country home of Sir James Gowans (1821-90). Gowans was a prominent Scottish architect who pioneered a new, highly ornate, Gothic-inspired architectural style. This energetic Victorian was also a railway engineer, quarry manager and local government politician. This shows a Biblical inscription, dated 1 August 1862, on the steading additions designed by Gowans. It reads: 'For Every House is Builded by Some Man, But He that Built All Things is God'. Although most of the steading additions were built in this period, the date 1842 also appears elsewhere in the steading. At the end of the 20th century, Gowanbank was bought and restored by an Edinburgh family, with the help of Linlithgow architects, William A Cadell. To pay for the costs of a faithful restoration, using authentic materials, the buildings were sold off in individual lots as work was completed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
